Steel Magnolias has long been one of my favorite movies. You can't go wrong with Southern humor, an all-star cast, and bleeding armadillo groom's cake. I have always wanted to make an attempt at this cake. Our local theater in DeFuniak Springs, The Florida Chautauqua Inc., announced recently that they would be hosting a production in honor of the 30th anniversary of the movie. Shortly there after a dear friend, who was also a cast member approached me about making the famous armadillo cake, and I immediately lost it with excitement.
There are several things I would change about the little guy if I had it all to do over again, but I would say that it mostly resembles the image I had. Its really funny because I feel like this cake is one of the most famous elements of the movie, but actually gets very little screen time. I had a hard time getting just the right screenshot to model him after.
I realize that Armadillo's have a smaller snout. I feel like with so many cakes, I need a practice cake, and then the actual cake.
The wonderful ladies at The Florida Chautauqua Inc., really knocked the performance out of the park, and they were able to hang out afterwards and celebrate with, "A good piece of ass."
Of course, true to the movie, this was a red velvet bleeding armadillo cake. It's not every day that I get requests for cake's as exciting as this. It made all my armadillo dreams come true.
